Activities by Age

Many of the activities on this site are broken down by age groups (which are approximate):

  • Babies (0-12 months)
  • Toddlers (1-3 years)
  • Preschool and Nursery (3 – 5 years)
  • Kindergarden and Reception (4-6 years)
  • Elementary / Grade School and Primary School (5+ years)

While I have organised activities into different age groups, many of the activities can be done with a wide range of age groups by differentiating or pitching the activities differently. For this reason some activities are posted to more than one age group.

As an example, we can look at banging on pots and pans: Babies can enjoy using a wide range of pots, pans and spoons to explore banging and making sounds and sharing this experience with their carers. This can be taken further with toddlers by helping them to explore volume and experiment with different ways to make the sounds loud and quiet. This can be further extended with Preschool and Reception age children by exploring making repeating patterns with different sounds. School age children can begin to experiment with how volume and pitch can be changed by changing different variables such as which materials are being hit. Older children can create their own experiments by deciding which variables they would like to change to see how it effects pitch or volume or something else. As you can see children of all ages can get something out of banging on pots and pans!
