Autumn Books for Preschoolers and School Children

This is a shortlist of autumn-themed books for preschoolers as well as school-age children. I have used a number of these in the past when teaching year 1 (first grade) as well as teaching preschool / early years foundation stage. I’ve included Amazon links (affiliate) in case you would like to purchase any of these books. It will also allow you to see further information and reviews from other readers which I always like to look at before buying!

Reading books is an excellent way to develop children’s communication and language skills. They introduce children to new vocabulary and provide opportunities to discuss things they have experienced in their everyday lives. In this case, they can discuss what they have noticed or found in the autumn!

The books are listed again below with more details. More details and reviews can be found by clicking them or the images above.

Leaf Man (Lois Ehlert)

Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf

We’re Going on a Leaf Hunt (Steve Metzger)

Stanley’s Stick (John Hegley)

*This isn’t strictly an autumn themed book but playing with sticks is always fun, and perfect in autumn.

Tree: Seasons Come, Seasons Go

Fletcher and the Falling Leaves

Squirrel’s Autumn Search

The Squirrels Who Squabbled

What Can You See in Autumn?

*This is an information book rather than a fiction book.

Let It Fall

Goodbye Summer, Hello Autumn

Autumn is Here!

Hocus Pocus, it’s Fall!

Sweep

Up in the Garden and Down in the Dirt

The Scarecrows’ Wedding

*This isn’t strictly an autumn-themed book but it is related. I love this book so I’ve included it in the list as it works with a harvest theme.

The Wind Blew

*Again, this isn’t strictly about the leaves falling but the windy weather fits with autumn.

In the Middle of Fall

One Leaf, Two Leaves, Count with Me!
